Khardiata Tandian still jailed amid signature forgery case delay in Dakar

Khardiata Tandian remains behind bars as the court adjourns a high-profile case involving a forged signature allegedly linked to Ousmane Sonko. The Dakar Criminal Court had initially scheduled a verdict for July 9, 2026, but proceedings were postponed for the second time.

This latest delay follows the court’s decision to secure the presence of a key figure in the case—Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy, identified as Tandian’s alleged accomplice. His absence during the trial prompted the judge to reschedule the ruling until July 23, 2026.

Absent accomplice delays justice

The case centers on allegations that Khardiata Tandian falsified a signature in connection with Ousmane Sonko, a prominent political figure. While she has been detained for over a year, the court insists on hearing from her alleged accomplice before finalizing the verdict.

The prosecution argues that Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy’s presence is essential to ensure a fair and complete trial. Without his testimony, the court cannot proceed, leaving Tandian in custody for the time being.

Defense pushes for provisional release

In response to the delay, Tandian’s legal team filed a request for her provisional release. Her lawyer argued that all procedural documents had already been submitted, making continued detention unnecessary. They also stressed that Tandian poses no risk of witness tampering or flight.

The defense further highlighted her deteriorating social and family situation, noting that she is a married mother whose prolonged incarceration is causing severe hardship. They contended that the time already served could cover any potential sentence, should she be convicted.

Prosecution opposes release on public order grounds

Despite the defense’s arguments, the prosecutor opposed the motion, citing risks to public order. The prosecution maintained that Tandian does not provide sufficient guarantees to ensure her appearance in court until the conclusion of the trial.

The court ultimately sided with the prosecution, rejecting the request for provisional release. Khardiata Tandian will remain in detention until the next hearing on July 23, pending the arrival of the missing accomplice.

Awaiting justice

The case now hinges on the presence of Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy at the next hearing. His absence has already derailed the initial verdict date, and the court remains firm on the necessity of his testimony before delivering a final decision.
