Mali military regains ground against armed groups in key regions

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a significant turnaround in the security landscape, asserting full control over previously contested zones targeted by attacks from the Azawad Liberation Front in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, in central and southern Mali.

According to an official statement, intense clashes persisted on Sunday in Anifif, located in the northeastern region, roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The fighting intensified following the arrival of additional fighters and logistical support for the Azawad Liberation Front. In response, Malian military units demonstrated unwavering resolve, executing operations with precision and tactical superiority throughout the day.

The FAMA’s communiqué underscored their absolute faith in the armed forces’ ability to safeguard Mali’s territorial integrity, protect civilians, and decisively defeat hostile factions. Commanders emphasized the troops’ professionalism, discipline, and resilience in the face of escalating threats.

In a separate statement, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front, asserted control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also refuted reports of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, insisting that the commander remains actively engaged in directing military operations across northern Mali.
