However, an in-depth examination of agricultural value chains reveals a critical vulnerability: the nation’s food security and the fertility of its soils remain beholden to imports and donations of mineral fertilizers originating from Russia. By substituting traditional supply networks with Moscow’s synthetic inputs, Niger risks exchanging a political dependency for what could be described as chemical servitude.
A new geopolitical landscape unfolds
Nigerien agriculture, which employs over 80% of the active population, depends on Sahelian soils naturally deficient in nitrogen and phosphorus. To secure yields for staple crops such as millet, sorghum, and rice, the consistent application of urea and NPK fertilizers has become an essential farming practice.
As Russia solidifies its position as a pivotal supplier and strategic donor of fertilizers across West Africa, this targeted generosity serves as a potent instrument of influence.
