Senegal constitution reform ruling binding on all, says assembly president

In a decisive move, the Senegal National Assembly President, Ousmane Sonko, has publicly acknowledged the authority of the Constitutional Council’s ruling invalidating the recently passed constitutional reform law. Speaking shortly after the Council’s decision, Sonko emphasized that the verdict is binding on all, leaving no room for alternative interpretations.

The leader of the Pastef party framed his response around the principle of institutional respect, stating, “Beyond any personal or political interpretations of the motivations behind this decision, one truth remains: it is binding on all. Case closed.”

The National Assembly’s top official further reflected on the importance of institutional roles, noting, “This moment underscores a fundamental truth: when institutions function within their designated mandates, crises do not arise.”

Reaffirming the legislature’s commitment to its duties, Sonko declared, “The National Assembly will continue to fulfill its responsibilities without compromise. Laws will be enacted or rejected in strict adherence to the commitments made to the Senegalese people.”
