Togo and Brazil deepen diplomatic ties in Lomé meeting

The President of the Council, Faure Gnassingbé, welcomed Luiz Ivaldo Villafañe Gomes Santos, the ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Togo, for a working session in Lomé on July 30, 2026. This high-level exchange underscores the ongoing commitment of both nations to nurture their bilateral relationship through dialogue and shared initiatives.

Bilateral cooperation: strengthening historical ties

The ambassador outlined the current state of relations between Lomé and Brasília, highlighting key areas where collaboration could be expanded. He emphasized Brazil’s readiness to deepen this partnership, ensuring mutual benefits for both populations. « We revisited the long-standing ties between our countries, our bonds of friendship and cooperation, and expressed our shared determination to further enhance these relations, » the diplomat remarked after the meeting.

South-South cooperation: a shared vision

The discussions also explored ways to invigorate Brazil’s engagement with African nations through dynamic South-South cooperation. The focus was on leveraging shared experiences, fostering solidarity, and aligning mutual interests to drive progress across the continent.

Decades of diplomatic progress

Official diplomatic relations between Togo and Brazil were established in 1972 and have since expanded into multiple strategic fields. Today, the partnership spans agriculture, security, vocational and technological training, and diplomatic initiatives. A significant milestone was achieved in November 2018 with the signing of an agreement in Lomé to waive visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and service passports between the two nations.

The meeting reaffirmed the dedication of both countries to advance their bilateral cooperation and align on regional and global challenges.
