Togo’s newest higher education institution gains strong leadership

The University of Datcha is set to begin a new chapter as the Togolese government officially appointed Professor Essohanam Batchana as its first president. The decision was announced during this week’s cabinet meeting, marking a strategic move to establish a leading academic hub in the Plateaux region.

Experienced academics to shape the new university

Professor Batchana brings extensive expertise to his new role, having previously served as Director of Academic Affairs and Enrollment at the University of Lomé. His deep understanding of academic administration will be crucial in building the foundation for this emerging institution.

He will be joined by Professor Kperkouma Walla, a distinguished botanist and plant ecologist, who has been named the university’s first vice-president. Together, this seasoned academic pair will oversee the establishment of robust administrative, scientific and educational frameworks for the new university.

The creation of the University of Datcha in September 2023 responds to two pressing needs in Togo’s education system:
