Willy Mengue, a leading figure in the opposition against Maurice Kamto’s return to the presidency of the Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC), is calling on Equinoxe TV to rebalance its news coverage.

This demand for balanced reporting concerns their political party following the appearance of Vice President Mamadou Mota on the program ‘La vérité en face’ Sunday evening.

According to Mengue, this step is necessary for ‘equity in news treatment,’ ‘the pursuit of journalistic truth,’ and ‘the right to information.’

In an open letter addressed to the CEO of Equinoxe TV, Mengue wrote: ‘In the absence of a direct debate between the two factions, there is an urgent need to grant a substantial right of reply regarding the program “La vérité en face” dedicated to the contested return of Professor Maurice Kamto to the head of the MRC. You kindly gave the floor to political friend Mamadou Mota on this pertinent issue. The quest for truth requires that you provide the same service to the protesters, whom I represent.’

On Sunday evening, Mamadou Mota defended the return to the MRC presidency. This is a return that Willy Mengue formally contests, calling it a ‘fraudulent return.’

Mengue added: ‘Equinoxe TV is known as the channel of the people that reports beyond the image. Your reporting on the manipulation of the MRC’s fundamental texts to facilitate the fraudulent return of a resigning individual to the party leadership will be fair and equitable if this legally claimed right of reply is carried out. The Cameroonian people are watching you on this matter.’
