Mali armed forces regain control amid clashes with armed groups

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a decisive shift in the conflict, asserting their regained dominance over regions previously targeted by attacks from both the Azawad Liberation Front in the northern territories and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims—an Al-Qaeda-affiliated faction operating in central and southern Mali.

Sustained military efforts in Anifif

In a formal statement, FAMA confirmed that intense fighting continued on Sunday in Anifif, a strategic location situated roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal, following the arrival of additional combatants and military reinforcements for the Azawad Liberation Front.

Highlighting their resilience, the army emphasized, « These attempts to destabilize our positions were met with unwavering resolve. Our troops engaged in sustained combat throughout the day, demonstrating exceptional courage and operational discipline. »

Unshaken commitment to national sovereignty

The communiqué reaffirmed the armed forces’ « absolute confidence in their ability to safeguard Mali’s territorial integrity, protect civilian populations, and decisively defeat hostile forces. » This declaration underscores the government’s determination to restore stability across the nation.

Statements from the Azawad Liberation Front

Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front, had earlier claimed control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also refuted rumors of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, insisting that Ag Akli remains actively involved in directing military operations across northern Mali.
