Mali army regains control in key combat zones against armed groups

The Malian Armed Forces have declared they have regained the upper hand and secured all contested zones targeted by attacks from the Azawad Liberation Front in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims—an Al-Qaeda affiliate—in central and southern regions.

Steady progress amid renewed clashes

In a formal statement, the Malian army confirmed that fighting continued on Sunday at Anifif, a strategic location in the northeast, roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal. This followed the arrival of additional fighters and equipment sent to reinforce the Azawad Liberation Front.

According to the official release, « in response to this escalation, Malian Armed Forces units pressed forward with unwavering resolve, sustaining combat operations throughout the day with courage and discipline. » The statement concluded with a strong reaffirmation of « full confidence in the ability of the Malian Armed Forces to defend national unity, protect civilians, and decisively defeat hostile forces. »

Leadership stands firm despite rumors

Azawad Liberation Front spokesperson Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan had earlier claimed control over Anfif amid the renewed clashes. He also dismissed reports of the death of the group’s top commander, Mbarek Ag Akli, asserting that the leader remains actively engaged in directing military operations across northern Mali.
