Mali army regains momentum in key combat zones against armed groups

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have declared that they have regained the upper hand and restored full control in areas targeted by the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in the north and by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, in central and southern regions.

Sustained clashes in Anifif as reinforcements arrive

In a recent official statement, the FAMa reported that fighting continued on Sunday in Anifif, located in the northeastern part of the country, roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The clashes followed the arrival of fresh human and material reinforcements dispatched to the MNLA.

The military communiqué emphasized the resilience of Malian troops, stating: « In the face of these renewed pressures, our units have fought with unwavering determination and discipline throughout the day, demonstrating courage and tactical precision. »

Unshaken commitment to national sovereignty and security

The FAMa reaffirmed their « absolute confidence in the ability of Malian forces to safeguard the nation’s unity, territorial integrity, protect civilians, and decisively defeat hostile forces. » The statement underscored the military’s resolve to maintain stability across all regions.

Meanwhile, the MNLA spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had earlier claimed control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also refuted reports of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, asserting that the commander remains actively involved in directing military operations across northern Mali.
