Mali’s military asserts control amid clashes with JNIM and FLA

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a shift in momentum across key conflict zones, asserting full operational control over areas targeted by the National Liberation Front of Azawad (FLA) in the north and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM)—an Al-Qaeda affiliate—in central and southern regions.

In a formal statement, FAMA confirmed sustained engagements near Anifif, located 110 kilometers south of Kidal, following the arrival of reinforcements to the FLA. The army emphasized that its troops, reinforced with fresh personnel and equipment, demonstrated relentless resilience throughout the day’s combat operations.

The communiqué underscored the military’s unwavering confidence in its ability to safeguard national sovereignty, protect civilian populations, and dismantle hostile forces. It highlighted the disciplined and determined response of Malian soldiers in countering adversarial advances.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the National Liberation Front of Azawad, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had previously claimed control over the Anifif area during renewed hostilities. He also refuted reports of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, affirming that the commander remains actively engaged in directing military operations across northern Mali.
